MINISTY OF COMMERCE

Ministry of Commerce

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

The Ministry of Commerce headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia was constructed in the late 1970s, succeeding an initial two-story building erected in the early 1950s to house the country’s first Ministry of Commerce.

In response to the increasing number of users and the evolving urban landscape, the Ministry of Commerce initiated a project to upgrade its main complex in Riyadh and to redesign the façade of its office building.

MINISTY OF COMMERCE RIAYDH, SAUDI ARABIA

Following a competitive selection process, ABDULLAH ALZEER + PARTNERS was appointed to redesign the site plan with objectives to alleviate traffic congestion caused by the mixed-use nature of the ministry’s complex and to develop solutions for the complexities associated with its three entrances.

The redevelopment of the site is envisioned to be sustainable and multifunctional. A key aim is to reduce the density of users arriving from a single direction and to integrate the complex with the new metro station opening on the east side. The new site must make a meaningful impact through flexibility and integration, resulting in a future-proof development that harmonizes with the fabric of the surrounding area.

Additionally, the client required the redesign of the elevation of the main building. One of their requirements was the dismantling of the freestanding elevation that currently covers the building from the west and east side.

Our proposals include demolishing the old building located on the west side to create space for additional parking and the re-provisioning of the newly built IT building. The new scheme has been developed to accommodate pedestrian pathways and parking areas, which will ease traffic flow and organize parking around the site.

The design of the new façade reflects the innovation, technology, and services that the Ministry of Commerce provides to the general public. The new design carefully respect and complements the existing structure. Our approach aims to clad the building’s structure in a manner that maximizes natural light penetration to all floors and highlights the modernist principles of the building.
